What is OOPS in Computer Science

Full Form of OOPS-

OOPS stands for Object-Oriented Programming. It is a programming paradigm that organizes software around objects rather than just functions or procedures.

An object represents a real-world entity and contains both data (attributes) and functions (methods). OOPS helps developers write programs that are easier to understand, maintain, and reuse.

What is OOPS?

For example: in a school management system a Student object can store information such as the student's name and roll number while also performing actions like displaying details or calculating marks.

Encapsulation is the process of combining data and the methods that operate on that data into a single unit called an object. It also restricts direct access to sensitive data.

Example: A bank account allows deposits and withdrawals but does not let users directly modify the account balance.



Here,

marks is private, so it cannot be accessed directly. We use setMarks() to store the value and getMarks() to retrieve it. This protects the data.



2. Inheritance

Inheritance allows a new class to acquire the properties and methods of an existing class. This reduces code duplication and promotes code reuse.

Example: A car class can inherit common features such as speed and fuel type from a Vehicle class.


Here,

Dog inherits the sound() method from Animal so it can use it without defining it again.




3. Polymorphism

Polymorphism means many forms. The same method can perform different tasks depending on the object that uses it.

Example: A draw() method can produce different shapes such as a circle or a rectangle based on the object.


Here,

The sound() method is overridden in Dog. Even though the reference type is Animal, Java calls the Dog version because the object is a Dog.





4. Abstraction

Abstraction hides unnecessary implementation details and exposes only the essential features to the user.

Example: When using an ATM, you can withdraw money without knowing how the banking software processes the transaction.

Here,

Animal declares the sound() method but doesn't define it. The Dog class provides the implementation.
