WHAT IS IRS
IRS stand for Indian Revenue Service. It is the Central Civil services (Group A services) of the government of India.It is responsible for the administration and collection of the various direct and indirect taxes that are collected by the government.IRS function under the department of revenue in the union ministry of finance.It plays a important role in the collection of direct taxes as income tax,wealth tax in India,which makes a significant contribution to the total tax revenue in the country.FUNCTION OF IRS
IRS officers implement the Direct Taxes Laws through the income Tax Department.They are responsible for compilation,administration,and policy formation of direct and indirect tax,so they are called as tax administrators of India and also known as the guardians of the financial borders of the country.
BRANCHES OF IRS
IRS has two branches -
1.IRS (Income Tax)
2. IRS (Customs and Central Exise)
These two branches are controlled by two separate atatutory bodies - Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT),and central board of Excise and custom(CBEC) respectly.The IRS officers are also appointed to law enforcement and intelligence organisations such as Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI),Research and Analysis Wing,and Intelligence Bureau(IB)
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA TO APPEAR INDIAN REVENUE SERVICE EXAM
A candidate who is seeking to appear in the IRS exam must fullfil the following criteria-----
1. Must be a Citizen of India
2. Must have a graduate degree from a recognised university
3. A Correspondence degree recognised by the government of India
4. Candidates who have passed the final exam of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India(ICAI),ICSI and ICWAI
5. Who have degree from a foreign university recognised by Association of Indian Universities
AGE LIMIT FOR IRS
The minimum age limit for a candidate is 21 year and the maximum age limit is 32 years for general category candidate.
The upper age limit based on caste reservation are as follows-
- For general category up to 32 year
- For OBC up to 35 years
- For SC/ST up to 37 years
NO OF ATTEMPTS FOR IRS
- 06 attempts for general category
- 09 attempts for OBC candidates
- No limit for SC or ST candidates
