WHAT IS INFANT MORTALITY RATE
IMR Stand for Infant Mortality Rate. It is the number of children that die before the age of one year per 1000 live children born in that particular year. The IMR is calculated number of children dying under one year of age,divided by the number of live births during the year ,multiplied by 1,000. It can be understood by the following illustration -
In a country or particular region number of death of the children under the age of one year is 50. Calculate the infant mortality rate.
ANSWER - In above question no of death of children is 50, so IMR will be
50
---- x 100 = 5 %
1000
Hence the mortality rate will be 5%.
There are so many causes of high IMR such as poor sanitation,poor water quality,malnourishment of he mother and infant,lack of prenatal and post medical care. Apart from these reason there may be others reasons also.
