WHAT IS LITERACY RATE

       Literacy defined as having the skills of reading,writing and ability to apply them to one's day to day life. According to the UNESCO,the definition of literacy is 'ability to identify',understand,interpret,create,communicate,compute and use printed and written material associated with varying context. Literacy also enabling individuals to achieve their goals,to develop their knowledge and potential and to participate fully in their community and society.

HOW LITERACY RATE IS CALCULATED

   The total percentage of the population of an area at a particular time aged seven year or above who can read or write with understanding. It is also called the Effective literacy rate.

 Effective literacy rate =      Number of literate person aged  7 or above
                                                 ____________________________________________ x   100

                                                 Number of population aged 7 or above
