FULL FORM OF ALU
WHAT IS ALU
ALU stand for an Arithmetic-logic Unit.It is a part of a computer processor that carries out arithmetic and logic operations in computer. In some processor, the ALU is divided into two units i.e an arithmetic unit and a logic unit.It represents the fundamental building block of the central processing unit of a computer.Latest CPUs contain very powerful and complex ALUs.HOW AN ALU WORKS
An ALU performs basic arithmetic and logic operations.Arithmetic operations are addition, substraction, multiplication and division and logic operations are comparison of values such as NOT,AND,OR etc.
All information in a computer is stored and manipulated in the form of binary numbers,i.e 0and 1.Transistor switches are used to manipulate binary numbers .Since binary numbers are two so there are two possible states of a switch one is open and other is closed. An open transistor through which there is no current is passed is O.A closed transistor through which there is a current pass is 1.
Operation can be accomplished by connecting multiple transistors. One transistors can be used to control a second one -in a result turning the transistor switch on or off depending on the state of the second transistor. This is referred as a gate because the arrangement can be used to allow or stop a current.
