WHAT IS SGOT
SGOT stand for Serum Glutamic Oxaloacetic transaminase. It is an enzyme that is normally present in liver and heart cells.SGOT is released into blood when he liver or heart is damage. The blood SGOT levels are increased in case of liver damage. It is also known as AST (Aspartate aminotransferase) .SGOT is low in the blood of a healthy person .The normal level of SGOT in the blood is around 5 to 40 units per litre of serum. Increased level of SGOT in blood indicates that there may be chances of damage of liver,heart,kidney or other tissue.
WHY SGOT TEST IS REQUIRED
This test is carried out to check the level of this enzymes in the blood .This test is help to diagnose the damage of liver,heart,kidney and muscles.Frequently it is done in the following cases-
1. In case of yellow skin and eye.
2. Swollen Belly
3. Loss of Appetite
4. Dark Coloured urine
5. Swollen legs and ankles
